Good governance
A legal requirement for care providers registered with CQC in England: have systems that check and keep improving the quality and safety of care.
Questions this can help you answer
- Are our governance arrangements working as well as we think?
- Do our committees and reports tell us what we need to know?
- Could we show someone the evidence behind our assurance?
- Would an independent view help us see what is hard to see from the inside?
Who this suits
- Care homes and adult social care
- Private medical and GP practices
- Dental practices
- Private clinics
- Community services
- NHS trusts and ICB/ICS organisations
Good governance and the regulations
For providers registered with CQC in England, good governance is a legal requirement (Regulation 17 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014).
It expects systems and processes to assess, monitor and improve the quality and safety of the services provided, to mitigate risks, and to maintain records of the people who use the service.

Common questions
What does a governance review look at?
It looks at whether your governance arrangements are working effectively and giving you appropriate assurance. That can include governance frameworks, committee and reporting structures, dashboards and board reporting, how evidence and assurance are mapped, and your policies and procedures.
Is this only for large organisations?
No. I help smaller providers such as GP practices, dental practices and independent clinics put proportionate governance in place, and I support larger organisations such as NHS trusts and ICB/ICS organisations.
What if I only need an independent view?
That is fine. I can carry out a focused review of your current governance arrangements and give practical recommendations based on what is already working, what could be strengthened and where assurance may be improved.
Start with a conversation
I take on a limited number of engagements at a time, so each organisation receives my full attention. If you are considering support, an early conversation is the best way to talk about timing.
